The record of Scripture states that the flood of Noah's time was caused by both rainfall over forty days and forty nights and the opening of the fountains of the deep. During a rougly one year period, the entire world, including the mountains were covered with water and the life that dwelled on land perished. This ocurred about 4,500 years ago on the Scriptural calendar.
Within a creationist view, many things can be expected under the conditions of such a flood. First, the fossils should show catastrophic and rapid formation, there should be clearly defined kinds of plants and animals with no transition forms in between, and both simple and complex organisms should exist from the beginning. Second, larger fossils should become polystrate in position as the flood layers quickly settle into place. Third, there should be human artifacts to be found in the fossil record.
Many erosional and depositional features should also exist across the earth on a large scale. Therefore the erosional rate of the mountains and continents as well as the river delta sedimentation or concentration of salts in the lakes and ocean should show signs of rapid erosion or signs of relative youth.
