Science in Creationism

by Todd Elder at Exploring Creation

Science refers to either the entire collection of knowledge gained by mankind or to the scientific method used for gaining that knowledge. The knowledge of science includes what can be observed by the senses and, therefore, only deals with the physical world and universe. Models are often made to explain an event or phenomena. The scientific method is a process by which models and ideas are carefully tested and includes the steps of observation, research, hypothesis, prediction, experiment, and review.

The Sciences

Physical Sciences

The physical or natural sciences look at non-living matter. Physics is the field of science which studies energy, force, and properties of matter including such topics as heat, magnetism, and light. Chemistry is the study of atoms and molecules as well as their reactions to each other. Astronomy is the study of everything outside of the Earth from the solar system, to the galaxies, and even to the universe. These sciences demonstrate a young Earth and universe that has not reached a state of equilibrium and that the material universe is deteriorating rather than building up.

Earth Sciences

The Earth sciences are a part of the physical sciences that focus exclusively on the planet Earth. Geology is the study of Earth's land forms with emphasis on the processes of erosion and deposition. Hydrology is the study of Earth's water whether in the form of ice, liquid, or vapor and with an emphasis on water on or near the surface of the Earth. Meteorology is a study of the Earth's atmosphere and weather. These sciences show a young Earth whose surface has undergone catastrophic deformation through flooding and glaciation as well as rapid depositional formation.

Biological Sciences

The biological sciences focus on organisms including plants, animals, and mankind. Botany is the study of plants which have a large impact on life especially in terms of converting solar energy into food and the conversion of carbon dioxide into free oxygen. Zoology is the study of animals including their structure, habitat, and interaction with the environment. Anthropology is the study of mankind and social culture including language. These sciences indicate a young Earth through a rapidly formed fossil record of complex plants and animals lacking transitional forms.

Science in Scientific Creationism

Scripture records a seven day period of creation and a young universe only thousands of years old. The creation of the earth and the universe is a historical event which cannot be directly tested. However, the creation account can be taken as a model with predictions that can be tested through experiments to see if they match what is observed in life. As expected, scientific research does give strong support and evidence for creationism and the creation account given in Scripture.
